How to Keep a Secret
Daily digging, physically and metaphorically, was initiated by the vision of a scream and a hole, ten years earlier. The disowned yard of a former electrical substation housed How to Keep a Secret, a series of semi-public actions which culminated in the installation of wishing wells, and located inside, Ear, Hand, Mouth (Pulling Sound from a Rock) by the one window which can still be opened.
The work explores the underground and its potential for roots, release, and the unseen.
Wet clay with no horizon, head held underground
Unpictured:
We wore running shoes to bed, slow gathering cart walks
Combing for glass, shallow wells, mostly dug by hand
Cradle for a rabbit’s skull, as it sounds
Noise basket, found unburied wire, woven
Hills of knee caps, ground fragments stacked on body on plinth
Quench, throws facing upwind
Images of salamanders, folded at the neck, buried death objects
