Annie Sarachan (b. 1990, Philadelphia) is an interdisciplinary artist investigating the construction of knowledges. Her studio practice relies on a nonlinear, spiraling experience of time and presence. Through the lens of Romanticism (but not a romantic), she holds objects-as-images and images-as-objects up to the unfinished project of Dada.
She is a storyteller indebted to artists pursuing new (or ancient) language. Through collage, sculpture, installation, drawing, (semi-)public intervention, and video, her work often tends toward intimate, alogical, and introspective re-imaginings.
Sarachan is inspired by the right-to-repair movement, an open-source ethos, and all those who do this sort of unsexy invisible work to keep relationships possible within complex systems. Her recent work with so-called unreliable narrators deals with the risk and necessity of belief, asking: who gets the privilege of telling the truth or of being believed? Which reality is loudest? What materials and spaces hold personhood and agency?
Her strongest complimentary color understanding is green/red. In any media she is attracted to repetition, arabesques and diagonals, lines without a hard ending point, soft edges where possible, asymmetrical balance, blue light, silhouettes, spirals, heavy weights, rust, grittiness, dissonance, harmony, simultaneous action, potential energy and tension, quiet, misbehaving, shared codes, warped grids, wobbly lines, anonymity, collectives, myth, mystery, mud, maintenance, impossibility, imagination.
Sarachan graduated with an MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2025 and then served as Graduate Teaching Fellow. She holds a BFA in Painting from Washington University in St. Louis, with a minor in History, from 2012. In between she maintained a quiet, frenetic studio practice while working in music education, community organizing, and becoming a childfree aunt, among other things. She is currently based in Baltimore, frequently traveling anywhere accessible by train.
